About Fencing

Fencing is an Olympic sport and has been included in every modern Olympic Summer Games since 1896. Fencing combines the strategic depth of chess with the physical requirements of boxing. Modern fencing is composed of three disciplines, each with its own distinct rules.

About Our Beginner’s Classes

Our Beginner’s I and Beginner’s II classes focuses on the foil, a light thrusting weapon. Classes include stretching, light conditioning, fencing specific footwork, and bladework.  The Beginner’s I session introduces basic concepts of the sport, such as mobility, basic stances and coordination.  The Beginner’s I session concludes with students engaging in a fully “electrical” bout against other class mates.  The Beginner’s II session continues where the Beginner’s I session ends, adding more basic skills as well as more rules based instruction.  After Beginner’s II classes, students may enroll in a Level 2 class, designed to sharpen bladework techniques, improve footwork movements and prepare the student for competition.  Private lessons are also available to students who need a more flexible schedule than our normal class schedule may provide.

Equipment

Provided equipment includes a mask, jacket and foil. It does not include a glove, which you must bring from home or purchase. Fencing gloves are available at BFC and start at $14. A work or gardening glove that covers the whole hand can be used. Additional fencing equipment may be purchased at our on-site store.

What to Wear

Appropriate athletic attire is required: comfortable pants, such as sweatpants, warm-ups, or leggings which must completely cover the legs and allow stretching and movement with ease; athletic shoes with non-marking soles; and a glove. Students without appropriate athletic attire will not be allowed to participate.
